How to Choose a Yoga Teacher Training: 7 Questions

Yoga teacher training costs real money and months of your life. It also shapes the teacher you become. Some courses are excellent. Some are a holiday with a certificate. Here’s how to choose a yoga teacher training that’s actually worth it.

1. Is it Yoga Alliance registered?

Yoga Alliance is the most widely recognised registry for yoga schools. A registered course meets a set curriculum standard, and graduates can register as teachers. Check the school’s listing yourself rather than taking the website’s word for it.

2. How many hours are face to face?

Ask how many hours are taught in person versus online or self study. You learn to teach by teaching, in a room, with feedback.

3. Who are the lead trainers?

Look for years of teaching, not just years of practice. Ask how many trainees they’ve graduated and where those graduates teach now.

4. How seriously is anatomy taught?

This is where weak courses cut corners. You need practical anatomy: how joints move, common injuries, and how to adapt poses for real bodies. Ask whether anatomy is examined, not just mentioned.

5. Will you actually teach during the course?

You should be teaching peers early, then real students, with structured feedback. Graduating without leading a full class is a red flag.

6. What happens after graduation?

The first months as a new teacher are the hardest. Ask about mentoring, community classes and pathways into paid teaching.

7. Does the format fit your life?

Intensive, weekends or part time. Choose the format you’ll finish, not the one that looks fastest.

Do you need to be advanced?

No. You need a regular practice and genuine curiosity. Many trainees join to deepen their own practice with no plan to teach. Coaches and athletes also use it to understand movement and recovery (see yoga for athletes).

Why we run teacher training

In 12+ years of running Raw Power Yoga, I’ve seen that great teachers are made, not born. They need real anatomy, real teaching practice and real support. That’s what our training is built around.

Raw Power Yoga Teacher Training

Our 250 hour Yoga Alliance teacher training runs from our Albion studio. Anatomy is examined, trainees work from a comprehensive training manual, and teaching practice is part of the course.

Can I teach straight after?

Yes, once you’ve graduated and arranged insurance. Most new teachers start with community or beginner friendly classes.
