Yoga for Desk Workers: Undoing the Sitting
The ABS National Health Survey found nearly half (46.9%) of employed Australian adults describe their work day as mostly sitting. If that’s you, you probably know the feeling by 3pm: stiff neck, heavy shoulders, a lower back that wants to be anywhere but that chair.
Here’s how yoga for desk workers helps, plus five moves you can do without leaving your desk.
Why long sitting feels so bad
Staying in one position for hours is the real problem. Tissues stiffen, circulation slows and small aches build. Australia’s physical activity guidelines recommend breaking up long periods of sitting as often as possible, for good reason.
The fix isn’t perfect posture. It’s more movement, more often.
Five moves for your desk
- Seated cat and cow. Hands on knees. Lift your chest forward, then round your back. Eight slow rounds.
- Chest opener. Clasp your hands behind you, draw the shoulders back, lift the chest. Five breaths.
- Seated twist. Sit tall, turn and hold the back of your chair. Five breaths each side.
- Standing hip stretch. Step one foot back into a short lunge and gently tuck the pelvis. 30 seconds each side.
- Chin tucks. Slide your chin straight back. Ten slow reps.
Set a reminder every 30 to 45 minutes. Two minutes of movement breaks the pattern.
Why a full class matters
Desk stretches are maintenance. A full class builds the strength and mobility your body needs to handle long days, and gives your mind a proper break from the screen. Many people start noticing a difference when they practise consistently each week.
Members Kate Hill and Anna Smith both work desk jobs and make regular classes part of their week. Every class runs for 60 minutes, so it fits before work, at lunch or after the day is done.
If your back is already complaining, read yoga for lower back pain. If stress is the bigger problem, try breathwork for stress.
Yoga for your whole team
If your whole team sits all day, the problem isn’t individual. We run workplace wellbeing programs for Brisbane organisations, with sessions that can include yoga, mobility and breathing for stress and focus.
Frequently asked questions
Can yoga fix bad posture?
It builds strength and mobility, which helps you feel better in a range of positions. Moving often matters more than one perfect posture.
Is a standing desk enough?
It helps you change position, but standing still all day has its own problems. Movement is the answer.
I’m stiff and unfit. Can I start?
Yes. Every class is designed for beginner to advanced. Read what to expect at your first class.
