Yoga Class Etiquette: The Unwritten Rules
Every yoga studio has a few unwritten rules. Nobody expects you to know them on day one, and nobody will tell you off. But knowing them helps you walk in relaxed, and helps everyone in the room have a better class. Here’s yoga class etiquette, made simple.
Before class
- Arrive 10 to 15 minutes early, especially for your first few classes. Rushing in late is stressful for you and distracting for others.
- Book ahead on the timetable so your spot is held.
- Shoes off at the door.
- Phone on silent and out of sight. One buzz can break the focus of a whole room.
- Tell your teacher about any injuries or if you’re pregnant.
Setting up
- Leave space. Line your mat up with others and leave room for people to move around.
- Make room for latecomers. If the class is filling up, a small shuffle makes all the difference.
- Grab props before class starts, not halfway through.
During class
- Keep chat for after. A quiet room helps everyone switch off.
- Rest whenever you need. Child’s pose is always an option. It’s not rude, it’s smart.
- Do your own practice. There’s no competition and nobody is watching.
- Stay for the final rest. Leaving during the last few minutes of stillness disturbs everyone. If you have to go early, tell your teacher and leave before it starts.
After class
- Wipe down and return props the way you found them.
- Say hello. The community is a big part of why people keep coming back.
Hygiene
Come clean, skip strong perfume, and bring a towel for stronger classes. Bare feet should be clean feet. See what to wear to yoga for the full list.
Frequently asked questions
What if I arrive late?
Come in quietly, set up near the back and join in. If the class has already settled into the opening breathing, wait for a natural pause.
Can I modify poses or skip them?
Always. Every class is designed for beginner to advanced, and teachers give options in every pose.
Is it OK to ask the teacher questions?
Yes, before or after class. Teachers love questions.
