What to Wear and Bring to Your First Yoga Class
You don’t need expensive activewear to do yoga. You need clothes you can move in and a few simple things in your bag. Here’s exactly what to wear to yoga, what to bring and what to leave at home.
What to wear
Fitted, stretchy clothes. Leggings, bike shorts or fitted training shorts. Loose shorts and baggy tops ride up when you’re upside down in downward dog.
A top that stays put. A fitted singlet or T shirt that won’t fall over your face when you fold forward.
Breathable fabric. You’ll warm up, especially in Raw Power. Choose fabric that handles sweat.
Bare feet. Yoga is done barefoot. Your shoes stay at the door.
For men
Training shorts with a liner, or fitted shorts under looser ones, plus a fitted T shirt or singlet. If you’d wear it to the gym and it doesn’t ride up, it’ll work.
What to bring
- A water bottle.
- A small towel, especially for stronger classes.
- A mat, if you have one. If not, mats are free to use at the studio.
- A change of clothes if you’re heading to work. There are bathrooms to change in, but no showers yet.
What to leave at home
- Heavy perfume or aftershave. You’ll be breathing deeply next to other people.
- Big jewellery. It gets in the way.
- A full stomach. Eat lightly, ideally a couple of hours before class.
